How To Make Your Own Indoor Greenhouse

Here’s a simple solution to an all too common problem. How many of us have too many houseplants that thrive out on the patio or deck but when we bring them indoors for the winter they kind of languish.

With some ordinary shelving material, wall mounts, brackets, ordinary pine boards, we can build an indoor greenhouse in any room of the house. Even an unfinished basement like this one.

With these boards I’ve installed cup hooks to the bottoms. From those I’m going to suspend ordinary shop lights that provide just the right kind of light for our plants. Let me show you what I mean.

The state of the art in indoor plant lighting has really come a long way. We’ve got a wide spectrum bulb in this shoplight that’s great for plants that thrive in bright sunlight. Maybe we’re starting peppers, or tomatoes or some kind of flowers that we’re going to plant outdoors, like these marigolds. This kind of light is terrific for these kinds of plants.

On the other hand, most of our houseplants are tropical plants that survive under a forest canopy and we’ve got lights specifically designed for plants that thrive in subdued light.
