How To Keep Squirrels From Bird Feeders

I like feeding birds. But I don’t really like feeding all the birds so I got this really nifty bird feeder.

If a bird is too light he can’t get into the seed and if he’s too heavy he can’t get into the seed. If he weighs just the right amount, like a Cardinal, he can get into the seed. Isn’t that nifty?

The other day though I came out and saw this part lying on the ground. And I looked and hey, this has all been gnawed by some big squirrel eating my birdseed.

And frankly my first thought was murder, but I don’t want to kill the squirrel. He’s just doing what squirrels have always done. He’s just chewing his way through something hard to get at something good.

So I thought of a better idea. Hot peppers. I aired dried them. Dried them again in an oven until they were good and crisp, put them in a coffee grinder and grind them down into a fine powder.

And then you are going to put the powder into the birdseed. You need to be careful when you’re doing this. These peppers are extremely hot, but for some reason they don’t bother birds at all.

Don’t get it in your eyes. Don’t get it in your mouth. Don’t get it in your nose. Get enough into your bird feeder that the squirrel will get a good taste once he gets in. I think the squirrel will come back to this feeder only one more time.
