Preparing And Installing Stone Edging In Your Landscape

The first step in installing a good-looking landscape is selecting a good edging. A good edging not only separates the lawn from a shrub bed but it also supports your lawnmower wheel when you mow around the landscape.

And I like to use stone for this purpose. It lasts a long time and in this case, 8 inches wide is plenty wide enough to support even the wheel of a riding mower.

And it’s not very difficult to install. In fact, the hard part of putting in stone edging is getting it from the store to your front yard. Unless you’re going to make a square bed, you’re going to have to cut almost every stone and that’s not difficult either.

I always lay my stone on a 2×10 padded with a piece of carpet. That supports the stone for its entire length.

Put on a pair of safety glasses and mark the stone where you want to cut it. In order to cut the stone, You’ll use a good sharp chisel and let the weight of your hammer do the work. Tap the chisel. Then move the chisel’s wedge and tap it again.

Don’t try to drive the chisel through the stone. It will crack right where you want it to. If we mark it in the right place then cut it right it should fit like a glove and it does. And we’ve got a landscape edging that will support our mower and last a long time.
